New airfield lights for London Stansted

London Stansted Airport is currently upgrading 3,600 airfield lights with new energy efficient, high performance Taxiway Centreline, Stop Bar and Approach lights supplied by TKH Airport Solutions. These lights were supplied within 12 weeks of the purchase order being received.

The lights follow the supply of Taxiway Centreline, Touch Down Zone (TDZ) and Threshold Lights that were installed in May 2019. The lights will reduce power consumption by around 70%, helping drive down operating costs and cutting CO2 emissions.

Due to the low level of air traffic, the airport has a unique opportunity to perform the replacement programme during daytime hours, which would have previously been unthinkable.

This programme will convert the airport into a complete LED airfield and follows the retrofitting of the airport’s Taxiway Guidance Signs to LED. The retrofit project was performed by the airport’s airfield electricians during normal operational times without the requirement for any major airfield closures or project costs including civil infrastructure. The retrofitted signs were subsequently photometrically tested to demonstrate ICAO / EASA compliance.
