Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport second runway

In 2020, TKH Airport Solutions has been awarded the airfield ground lighting contract, based on CEDD technology, for the second runway at Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Istanbul, Turkey. The contract includes a hybrid solution, whereby the taxiways and all other addressable light fixtures will be provided in CEDD AGL technology. The CEDD installation comprises around 7,000 fixtures and 270 basestations. The main runway will be equipped with the traditional 6.6 A LED AGL technology.

The realization of the second runway was delayed due to construction issues with the highway crossing underneath the runway. The new runway was officially opened on December 25, 2023.

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport hosted over 16 million passengers in 2020 and is the second busiest airport of Turkey and Europe’s 8th busiest airport. It decided to expand its airfield with a second runway to increase the hourly capacity from 40 to 80 aircraft movements.

Sabiha Gökçen was selected as the ‘Airport of the Year’ at the CAPA Awards for Excellence in 2019. Besides, its efforts to improve energy efficiency helping reduce carbon emissions resulted in the airport becoming one of the few LEED certified airports in the world in 2020. The choice for the TKH CEDD technology is a great fit with the airport’s environmentally-conscious vision and eco-friendly implementations and will result in substantial reduction of power consumption compared to traditional LED lighting installations.
